The Commission Years (1831–1881)

Fifty years of direct British administration and the move of the capital to Bengaluru.

In 1831 the British took over the administration of the Mysore kingdom and moved its administrative capital from Mysuru to Bengaluru. The longest-serving commissioner, Sir Mark Cubbon, gave his name to Cubbon Park. The park was laid out in 1870 and first called Meade's Park.

The railway reached the city in 1864, the telegraph arrived and the Attara Kacheri (today's High Court building) was completed in 1868. In 1881, in what is known as the Rendition, power was handed back to the Wodeyars, with Chamarajendra Wadiyar X as ruler.
